From a private Yalecrest garden to major civic public gardens, every project starts with a process that is equal parts design strategy and conversation. We begin by researching a site's social, ecological, physical, and historical context, weaving this brief into visual stories that invite everyone into a design conversation — asking questions and sharing ideas. Whether the project is streamlined or multilayered, each one begins with the same initial steps.
Our first meeting, we will establish basic information about the site, the scope of the project, and to guide you through our approach and fees.
If we think we are the right team to help achieve your aspirations, we will proceed to take time for walking, talking, and listening closely to your ideas, inspirations, and ambitions. What is felt in those initial moments can set the creative direction for a project for years to come.
Our conversations with you help us understand and connect to what this site means to you and the people who live and work there. Through an understanding of the architecture, its history, development, layout, geography, proposed uses, and maintenance regime, these conversations begin to inform the way forward, using analysis to inform our proposals. We encourage our clients to engage fully in the design process — it is our hope that the most meaningful and resonant outcome will be the result.
Once a fee for the Concept Design stage is agreed, we proceed to an Initial Site Context Study before starting on the Concept Design for your review. This is developed in full consultation with you, so that any ideas or additions can be considered and incorporated as we move along.
Once the Concept Design is agreed and finalized, a budget will be agreed upon for the project and we start work on the Detailed Design, producing a package of construction plans and details to allow your landscape to be built. We can also help identify an appropriate contractor, if required.
During Construction we will attend the site to engage in the process of reviewing the work and continue to advise on progress. Kristina Pulfer will be on site for all construction events and to lay out all plants on site prior to planting.
Following completion, and during the establishment of new growth, we recommend regular follow-up visits to ensure that your garden is settling in and thriving, and to advise on its progression.
